About the analytical lab at IOM

The IOM lab is a busy contract lab with most of our work relating to external customers.  We also support occupational hygiene surveys, environmental monitoring, contaminated land investigation and building surveys. We provide analysis for the IOM Occupational Hygiene, our regional offices and our Research Division.  We have UKAS accreditation for all the routine analysis that is undertaken and pride ourselves on providing a high standard, quality service delivery and a high degree of customer care.

The Scientific Technician Role
Here at IOM in Edinburgh we are looking for a Scientific Technician to join our laboratory team. 

The successful applicant will undertake and report analysis within the mineralogy section of the analytical lab and conform with the requirements of our UKAS accreditation.  They will liaise with customers and assist in business development, and, when required, undertake method development and validation.

The range of analyses within the section includes the analysis of asbestos in bulk materials and soils, asbestos fibre counting, the analysis of crystalline silica and other materials by X-ray diffraction and infra-red spectrophotometer and the analysis of asbestos and other materials by scanning electron microscope/energy dispersive X-ray analyser.

The successful applicant would be trained in these techniques as required.

Requirements for the Scientific Technician Role

  • You will ideally have an Honours Degree in earth sciences, geology, or a closely related subject, with an interest in mineralogy.
  • Having experience and holding the BOHS P401 and/or P403 qualification will also be at an advantage.
